"Is the problem over state aid to the Polish shipyards a case of economic principles quoted by the EC, or one of moral, nostalgic, perhaps political nature seen from Warsaw? After all, the shipyards are considered a living symbol of former anti-Communist resistance, Gdansk being the cradle of Solidarity. Dr Tomasz Teluk from the Center For The New Europe in Brussels says both sides have valid arguments.
'First of all, Brussels doesn't like state aid to companies. This kind of economic support is very limited in the EU. Poland is a country where this kind of support is quite common. On the other hand this business has always had a privileged position with the state, because of its main role played in recent history. This is why political and financial support for the shipyards has moral acceptance and tolerance of all (Polish) citizens.'
